For almost five decades, St Mary’s Sharks Basketball Club has been a cornerstone of the Greensborough sporting community, fostering young talent and building a strong sense of belonging through basketball.
Founded in 1981 by Jean Phillips, the club began with just two girls’ teams. What started as a small, community-driven initiative quickly established itself on the foundations of inclusion, passion, and a commitment to junior sport. In those early days, players proudly wore sky blue uniforms – a symbol of the club’s humble beginnings and close-knit identity.
As basketball continued to grow in popularity across the region, so too did St Mary’s. The introduction of boys’ teams marked an important step forward, expanding opportunities for more young athletes to be part of the club. With this growth came an evolution in identity, as navy and darker blue uniforms were introduced for boys’ teams, while girls continued in lighter tones. This period reflected the club’s transition into a broader and more inclusive program.
A defining moment in the club’s history came in 1988 with the introduction of the “Shark” as its official logo and identity. The Shark quickly became a powerful symbol of the club’s spirit – representing resilience, teamwork, and a competitive edge that continues to define St Mary’s today. Over time, it has become one of the most recognisable emblems within the local basketball community.

From its modest beginnings, St Mary’s has experienced remarkable and sustained growth. Today, the club proudly fields close to 60 teams across both boys’ and girls’ competitions, supporting players from Under 8s through to Under 20s. Competing in the Diamond Valley Basketball Association, St Mary’s has established itself as one of the largest and most respected junior basketball clubs in Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs.
In 2022, the club embraced a new chapter with a full uniform unification and rebrand. Girls’ teams transitioned to the navy uniform, aligning with the boys’ program and creating a single, unified club identity. This change was accompanied by the introduction of a modernised Shark logo – a fresh look that honours the club’s rich history while positioning it strongly for the future.
Today, St Mary’s Sharks Basketball Club is home to almost 460 members and continues to thrive as a family-oriented, community-focused sporting club. Its success is driven by the dedication of passionate volunteers who give their time to support and develop the next generation of athletes.
While the club has grown significantly over the years, its core values remain unchanged – inclusion, development, sportsmanship, and a genuine love of the game.
