The Doreen Cougars Basketball Club stands as a testament to passion, community spirit, and a long-standing commitment to developing basketball across Melbourne’s northern suburbs. With roots stretching back more than five decades, the club has grown from humble beginnings into a respected and successful organisation within Victorian basketball.
Originally established in 1969 as East Brunswick Basketball Club (E.B.B.C.), the club was founded by Rino Zancan and Steve Chadd to service Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs. Its earliest training sessions were held at the Church of Christ, hall in Rae Street, North Fitzroy—marking the beginning of a journey that would impact thousands of young athletes.
Between 1969 and 1990, the club participated in a wide range of competitions, including those held at Albert Park Basketball Stadium, the Melbourne Showgrounds, Broadmeadows, Thomastown, and Coburg. Among these, its involvement in the Diamond Valley Basketball Association competitions played an important role in shaping the club’s competitive pathway and regional presence.
A significant milestone came in 1984, when the club entered its first teams into the Diamond Valley competition, strengthening its connection with one of the region’s key basketball associations. This relationship has continued to be an important part of the club’s development and competitive structure.
In 1975, the club relocated to Mill Park and surrounding districts, aligning itself with Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern corridor. The opening of Mill Park Stadium in 1990 marked another turning point, as the Thomastown competition transitioned to the new venue. During this period, founding member Rino Zancan played a pivotal leadership role, becoming the inaugural President of the WCBA (Mill Park competition) before later serving as stadium manager.
The club’s growth continued into the 21st century. In 2012, it expanded its catchment area to include Mernda, Doreen, Wollert, Craigieburn, and Donnybrook—reflecting the region’s population boom. Two years later, in 2014, the club formally adopted the name Doreen Cougars and became an incorporated association. This change enabled participation in the EDJBA competition, which requires clubs to be aligned with a recognised suburb.
Today, the Doreen Cougars remain deeply committed to fostering a family-oriented environment that encourages participation, development, and a love for the game. Managed by a Chief Executive Officer and a dedicated committee—many of whom are past players or parents—the club continues to build on its strong foundations.
Over its 55-year history, the club has achieved success not only at the local level but also across Victoria and Australia. It has proudly produced players who have gone on to represent at junior and senior championships, as well as at state, national, and even international levels.
Most importantly, the Doreen Cougars Basketball Club has provided opportunities for thousands of children to engage in basketball, build friendships, and develop lifelong skills. As it looks to the future, the club remains committed to ensuring that every child with a passion for basketball has the chance to play, grow, and belong.
