Sam began refereeing a bit over two years ago, drawn to the role as a great way to stay fit while earning money. Sam played basketball throughout primary school and on and off during high school.
Currently a B Grade referee, Sam is also involved behind the scenes by running the shot clock for Division 1 Men’s games on Monday nights. His experience and involvement have made him a familiar face in the community, especially with the older junior levels. He particularly enjoys refereeing the U18s.
One of the biggest highlights for Sam has been meeting new people and growing in confidence through refereeing. The social aspect of the role has been just as rewarding as the on-court experiences. The most challenging part, however, has been remembering everyone’s names -understandable given how many people you encounter each week!
Outside of basketball, Sam likes to unwind by watching movies or listening to music, simple pleasures that help him relax after a busy day. Though he doesn’t follow sports closely and doesn’t have a favourite player, he finds plenty of enjoyment in the game itself.
Sam’s ideal holiday would be somewhere far from the city – the mountains or the beach are always good.
Congratulations to Sam on being selected referee of the Month of April 2025, we look forward to seeing where his refereeing journey takes him next!
